How To Prepare For An Underwater Photo Shoot

It is completely natural to have a certain level of anticipation when it comes to partaking in an underwater portrait photography session especially with submersions of babies.

As discussed in Underwater Baby Portrait Photography, babies thoroughly enjoy the experience and the professional photographer will only require 3-6 submersions, providing that the subject is entirely happy with it.

As it is usually the parents who have the concerns we have created a checklist of things to consider. Feel free to make notes from the following Aquashots tips:

  • Make sure the subject (this could be you or your baby) is rested and relaxed prior to the session, because facial expressions are the most natural underwater.
  • Remember the photographer wants a good photograph just as much as you do, otherwise they won't make a sale, so trust their judgement about the way you look.
  • Try not to eat up to one hour prior to photo-shoot. This can cause stomach cramps which can reduce the enjoyment of the experience.
  • Try not to force the pose to re-create an image you have seen elsewhere, every one looks and behaves differently so enjoying the experience will ensure the best results.
  • Do not enter the water if the subject is experiencing any of the following: sickness, headache or dizziness, sleep deprivation, ear infection or nasal congestion; the water can aggravate these conditions.
  • It is advised not to enter any aquatic venue if the subject has an open wound, contagious skin / blood infection or respiratory virus.
  • Above all, have fun! - Underwater Portrait Photography is a unique experience and you will want to show off some truly original photos so you have to have a good time!
